Change of seasons bring about change. For instance, “For everything there is a season…” (Ecclesiastes 3:1, NRSV). Likewise, if this is our season to make change then our spirit will continue to disturb our emotions until we address the issue.
To emphasize, we have been at a place in our minds where we have recognized a past scenery. We could even smell the fragrance of it presence. We romanced the memory and we tried to visualize that place as a happy place; a place where we were having fun. Yet, in the midst of it all we knew if we were honest and we relived that memory that the outcome would be horrifying.
What I mean is, we can choose the route we are very familiar with; the one that has brought about nothing, but pain. Or, we can take a risk and venture on a journey we have never ever experienced.
In fact, as addicts our thinking has been distorted. Therefore, we have to change our attitude and actions. We have to look beyond those things that bring about artificial happiness such as drinking, drugs, fornicating, gambling, gluttony, greed, gossip, and look to God for wholeness. After all, “fools think their own way is right, but the wise listen to advice” (Proverbs 12:15, NRSV).
Especially, since God created us all in his image for a purpose and has “plans for [us]…plans to [prosper us] and not harm [us], plans to give [us] a future with hope …” (Jeremiah 29:11, NRSV).
So, do we think these are promises that are not being fulfilled? I think not. I am a living witness that when we let go and let God, we will not have to worry about our path, as long as we allow God to direct us. “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own insight. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths” (Proverbs 3:5-6, NRSV). Sure, we can choose to pick up our will again, but a commitment is necessary for recovery. What road will you choose?
