Somethings are taken for granted, like the importance of caring for oneself. I have always been amazed at how quickly we will want to manage and take care of other persons business, but have a tendency to avoid our own. That is called procrastination.
There is something in our psychological make-up that gives us warning that we need certain things to survive. Like our bodies will tell us when we need water and food because we become thirsty and our stomachs will growl. We also desire shelter; no one really wants to be in the rain and snow or blazing hot sun. Some even crave love, and yearn for companionship so that is why we seek out others. Have you ever noticed that when we move into a new relationship where we are bubbly about someone that we tend to pamper and do more self care because we want to impress that person. Then what about trying to sway oneself?
For example, have you ever had that gnawing in the pit of your stomach that you know the time has come where change is needed? But, because we have a tendency to become comfortable with what we know we usually are fearful to make change. “For this reason I remind you to rekindle the gift of God that is within [us]…; for God did not give us a spirit of cowardice, but rather a spirit of power and of love and of self-disciple” (Second Timothy 1:6-7).
So, today is that day for us to make that commitment to self that we will be responsible for our care. Sure this might mean no second helpings during meal times. Maybe we will plan to get at least 8 hours of sleep. That certainly can help us make better decisions for tomorrow. Or perhaps we will take a brisk walk to eliminate stress and at the same time that can lower our high blood pressure. Surely, one can enjoy a cool salad with some fresh fruit. Another simple care is to avoid drama by saying “no I am not interested, but I wish you the best.” We certainly will be more at peace and serene by handling our own business and leaving other people’s business to them.
What task will you challenge today to take care of self?
